Monster Menagerie

Socially-Engaged Workshop + Ceramic Installation

150+ clay monsters were created during a public outdoor workshop, then fired and placed in an outdoor area along a public footpath as a collection of ‘monsters in a menagerie’. Part of Art on the Beltline (juried), 2015.

The aim of the project was to create a collaborative installation of hand-built ceramic monsters. My partner on this project, Kira Hegeman, and I created a pop-up outdoor classroom in Grant Park in Atlanta. The workshop was free and open to any participant who wanted to join. We gave participants initial instruction on handbuilding techniques and helped facilitate the artmaking process. Participants were then invited to include their piece in a collective installation that would be located on the Atlanta Beltline (a series of trails that circle the city and work to connect neighborhoods). The pieces were fired to maturity and installed in a designated section of the Beltline (the Interim Eastside Trail). Monsters were embedded in the natural features of the area as a monster gathering.
